Welcome to the website of the UK's oldest Society for professional women writers. Founded in 1894 by newspaper proprietor Joseph Snell Wood, SWWJ has grown to become an international association, and is affiliated to women's associations worldwide. In 2004, the Society took the decision to invite men who are published writers to join us as Associate members.

Our aims include the encouragement of literary achievement, the upholding of professional standards, and social contact with fellow writers and others in the field, including editors, publishers, broadcasters, and agents.

Many of our meetings are held at The New Cavendish Club, 44 Great Cumberland Place, London W1. (The nearest tube station is Marble Arch.) Facilities include lounge, bar, dining room, library and conference rooms plus accommodation, lunch and/or dinner at reasonable cost.

Regular events include workshops, visits to places of literary interest, our annual Country Members Day, Autumn Lunch, and Christmas get-together, all of which include big-name guest speakers, a biennnial residential Weekend Conference featuring talks, discussions, and seminars on a wide variety of topics, plus biennial overseas trips.

Outside London, Regional Groups hold meetings and social events.

The Overseas Section helps to keep overseas members in touch with activities in the UK and with each other. Overseas Liaison Officer is Sylvia Kent.

Membership includes:
The Woman Writer, currently published six times a year. Editor: Ann Hamilton
The Society's Press Card.
Regular competitions for members working in all areas of writing.
Postal Critique Service run by members, for members.
Affiliated membership of The New Cavendish Club, and The London Press Club plus corporate membership with the British Federation of Women Graduates.
