Visit to Chawton House Library, September 2011.

Pamela Birley and Zoe King recently visited Chawton House Library, where the Society's many trophies and cups are displayed.

The Library is a UK registered charity with a unique collection of books focusing on women's writing in English from 1600 to 1830.

This specialist collection, set in the home and working estate of Jane Austen's brother, provides the opportunity to study and savour the texts in their original setting and inspires passion in readers of all ages.

Jane Austen's own former home is very close by, and is open to visitors. It features information about her writing, and also films and television productions of her work, including some fascinating costumes.

The Woman Writer - The History of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists published by The History Press.

Author Sylvia Kent says:

"I've traced the history of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists from 1894 to date. So many of our pioneering members made their mark in journalism, literature and poetry. The book celebrates not only our great Society, but also the centenary, in 2010, of Joyce Grenfell - one of our famous Presidents - although we'd been established for 50 years when she joined us. There is a chapter dedicated to Joyce and she meanders throughout some of the other chapters..."
