Getting published: getting paid – lessons I have learnt.

Writers have been defined as those who find writing more difficult than other people. Certainly, if writing is to be published and earn, both care and skill are necessary. Rules are made to be broken it is said, but Patrick Forsyth reckons that there are some rules, as well as principles and what might be called ‘tricks of the trade’, that can help.
   Patrick says: “Having had my first book published in 1980 and earned what is (to me) a significant part of my income from writing since then, I found early on I had a great deal to learn and have now evolved a number of approaches that I regard as tried and tested and helpful.”
This session will run through a number of these practical principles designed to help improve:

• The quality of writing
• Productivity of working
• Strike rate of agreements to publish
• Revenue coming from publication.

   While never a ‘bestseller’, Patrick Forsyth has had a large number of books published (both non-fiction and fiction) and has books translated into 26 languages. He has also written a large number of articles, is published in print and online, and has had an involvement in a wide range of publishing activities from co-authorship to copywriting. He is much involved in the writing scene, being a Fellow of SWWJ, a member of several writing groups and conducting the occasional workshop on aspects of writing.
