Diligence and determination are the basic principles required for a successful career as a writer according to Patrick Forsyth in his recent Zoom workshop.
In an informative and enjoyable talk for members, Patrick covered a range of essential points for developing skills to become a published writer.
His advice included having a clear objective for what you write, making sure the grammar is correct and the importance of being productive. He suggested getting to know the editors and publishers of where you send your work, so they can rely on you for articles and you get to know what their requirements for subject, style and length of material are.
Patrick also discussed writing from the other side. Publishing is a business and editors are constrained by current trends and popular genres – although there is always the lucky exception. He also discussed ways for writers to promote their work, saying it is a matter of personal choice but time away from writing is lost time.
There was also valuable information on dealing with writer’s block. ‘Just write what comes next,’ said Patrick, ‘and when you come back it’s easier to fill in the missing part.’
Patrick Forsyth has been witing and getting published since 1980 and it is clear that he still thoroughly enjoys all aspects of writing as well as sharing his knowledge and experience.
