A festive time was had by all at the SWWJ Christmas tea in December.
Members gathered in the Lady Violet Room at the National Liberal Club, to enjoy an afternoon of all things writing, along with plenty of tea, delicious sandwiches, scones, and cakes.
The popular annual event gives members a chance to get together before Christmas and look over the year’s writing achievements and swap writing goals for the new year ahead.
Novelist Claire Fuller was the guest speaker and it was also an afternoon of prize-giving, with presentations to members who were worthy winners of recent SWWJ competitions.
Awards were handed out to Marilyn Pemberton [winner of the 2023 John Walter Salver trophy for the historical fiction] and Claire Dyer, who won the 2023 Elizabeth Longford Rose Bowl for poetry. Members then settled in for a delightful talk by novelist Claire Fuller, who gave us a fascinating insight into how she became a writer and her route to publication.
She talked about her journey into writing via being a sculptor and the inspiration and work behind her five published novels, Our Endless Days, The Memory of Animals, Swimming Lessons, Bitter Orange, and Unsettled Ground.
Claire finished her talk by taking questions, before a raffle was held and members headed home with the thought of an exciting 2024 ahead to mark our 130th anniversary.
